BERKELEY CASTLE

THE BERKELEY CASTLE was constructed as a private residence in 1885 by Samuel Taylor Suit, President of the Washington and Chesapeake Railroad. Washington socialites were entertained lavishly at the castle which included Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B Hayes as its guests. The Castle, which is a replica of the Berkeley Caste in England, is located on over 5 acres of land on Highway 9 just two blocks above the town of Bath in historic Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, a few miles from Interstates 70, 81, & 68, and just 75 miles west of Dulles Airport. Views of four states can be seen from the castle.

PROPERTY DESCRIPTION:

The Berkeley Castle contains over 20 rooms including a 45' X 26' stone great room with 2 fireplaces and 16' ceilings. The dining room and 2nd floor library are paneled in carved Georgian pine. There are 8 bedrooms, 6 full baths, 3 half baths, and a recently remodeled apartment with its own kitchen, bath, bedroom, and laundry room for caretaker or owner-operator. The castle also features a wine cellar, watch tower, tower room, and a refurbished conference room. The property was fully renovated in 2001 by Associated Investors Group, LLC. However, as the result of other business interest, Associated has directed an immediate sale of the property at absolute auction. New five zone heating, air-conditioning, electrical upgrades, roofs, and windows were installed. A commercial grade kitchen was designed & applianced on the first floor. Included with the sale of the Castle is a well permit allowing drilling into the famous Berkeley Springs warm mineral springs.

BUSINESS DESCRIPTION:

Berkeley Springs offers many antique shops, restaurant and spas. Attractions include: local Spa’s and Warm Springs where George Washington once took therapeutic cures; the Historic C & O Canal; the Cacapon State Park and River, which offers horseback, riding, fishing, boating, and golf; and the Coolfront Resort. The Berkeley Castle property would be an outstanding private residence, bed & breakfast or corporate retreat.

{{Castlefinder note!}} Berkeley castle was just renovated, and was sold at auction on May 4, 2002. I do not yet know what the new owner intends to do with the castle. He may decide to live in it, use it as a bed and breakfast, for conventions, or for tours and weddings. If I learn more about his plans, I will post that information here. Until then, it is probably best not to bother him or the castle.

I have some very bad news. I was just informed that Andrew Gosline, the owner of Berkeley Castle died on December 2nd, 2014. This is a link to the story:

I met Mr. Gosline a few times up at his castle which is about seven miles from our castle. He will be sadly missed in Berkeley Springs.
